Left of the Rhine between Mainz and Worms lays one of Germany’s largest and oldest wine countries. Even the Romans recognised that Rheinhessen was ideally suited for cultivating grapes: lots of sunshine, low levels of precipitation, rich soil and valuable red slate slopes offered them – just like they do today – optimum conditions for top-level winemaking.
